Is It the End of the World?

Is It the End of the World?

The 2024 presidential election is finally over and while many are celebrating, others are convinced the end of the civilized world as we know it has arrived.

Can both polarized opinions be correct?

The “end of the world” seems to be an increasingly popular topic these days. The phrase is usually associated with religious communities forecasting the world’s demise, sometimes with predicted dates.

Secularists mock these predictions as laughable. But they have their own versions of coming worldwide destruction: global warming, mass extinctions of various species, and global nuclear war, just to name a few. And now, the election of a president some believe is the worst possible choice for the United States, even while others believe he is the best possible choice for our nation.

So how should we respond as Christians?

How to Respond

First, let’s talk about what not to do.

Irrespective of how each of us voted, let’s not belittle the sincere concerns of those who disagree with us. Respect and kindness are hallmarks of Christians regardless of political persuasion. Let’s not mock the fears of others. Those who did not vote for the declared winner dread the worst. Will a worst-case scenario of all their fears occur? No.

On the other hand, those who voted for the declared winner have high expectations for a wish-list of accomplishments. Will every item on their wish-list be fulfilled to the last detail? History tells us this perspective is not realistic either.

So let’s be Christians who are salt and light in a political environment known more for darkness, name-calling, and lies. Let’s speak truth with grace and peace. And let’s work to apply biblical values to every area of life: politically, morally, and relationally. To support the sanctity of life in protecting the innocent in the womb. To support the rule of law that upholds our democratic republic. And, most important of all, to share the gospel of Christ with a world that needs to understand this life is temporary. Our choices here have eternal consequences.

The Bible confirms the end of the world will indeed occur, but the specific date is unknown. And even if we did know the exact date, we have no assurance we will actually live to see it. Accidents happen, health issues develop, crimes occur. No one has a guaranteed life span.

Politics aside, what if we knew this would be our last week on earth—whether because of death or because the end of the world will arrive? Would that make a difference in the way we live today?

For some, getting ready for that final day requires restoration to our heavenly Father through faith in Christ. For those who already know Christ, living with an eternal focus will prepare us for the time when this temporary life on earth ends.

Predictions about the end of the world will continue to multiply until the last day finally arrives. But the bottom line is that any day could be the end of the world as we know it – either because Christ will return or because we will face death.

Until then, let’s remember that regardless of the occupant of the White House, God is still on His throne, sovereign over His creation.

How does knowing that God is sovereign over rulers and nations give you confidence to trust Him irrespective of the political landscape?
